Stellwagen Bank

The photos in this gallery are actually from a couple different whale congregation areas. The first is Stellwagen Bank Marine Conservation area located just off the Massachusetts coast. The second is the St. Lawrence Marine Park, located at Tadoussac Quebec and it's a National Marine Conservation Area (Canadian National Parks System).

  • First attempt at capturing pelagics.. It's a longshot but I'm wondering if this is a Parasitic Jaeger Juvenile.

  • Bug Light at the entrance to Plymouth Harbor. It's a cast-iron caisson lighthouse built in 1871.
  • This trip was on July 28, 2012 and actually was a bit choppy. Once we reached the point of Cape Cod just off Provincetown, there were numerous clusters of activity.
  • This trip was on Capt Johns Whale Watch out of Plymouth, MA. I believe all of the whales we saw that day were humpbacks. difficult to id the birds from this distance but I believe they are Greater Shearwaters.

  • Jumping away from Stellwagen, these are a couple of Finbacks just off Tadoussac Quebec. This is the Gulf of St Lawrence just at the mouth of the Saguenay River.

  • Gaspe, the end of the Appalachian Mountains. Thousands of seabirds were nesting in these massive cliffs.
  • Heading out along the northern shore of the Gaspé Peninsular. This is a prime whale and seabird environment.
